I saw it in Taipei while on a business trip to Asia, in 120 fps, 3D, 4K, the format that Ang Lee would like it to be seen. Loved it. It's a very Ang Lee film, and my guess is that the American critics were expecting a totally different film, probably due to the somehow misleading trailer and all the awards talks about its NEW technology. It does look like fake at the beginning and I constantly imagined how it would look like in a more traditional format, but when Billy started to get on the stage for the halftime walk, I suddenly totally understood why Ang Lee insisted on presenting the film in this format, because it felt like I was there with Billy at that moment, it's real and yet surreal. And I can feel the kindness Lee had towards that group of soldiers; it's not an anti-war film, it's not a war film either; it's just a close, quiet and short observation on a confusing 19 year old soldier's life.
The whole cast did a great job. The standouts are Alwyn and Stewart for me, and for all Stewart's work in this film and films in the past two years, I genuinely think she deserves an Oscar supporting actress nom for her true and organic performances in Billy Lynn. As a Brit, Alwyn did a completely convincing job as a 19 year old American boy, just in this regard, he's already surpassed the bigger name British and Irish actors like Hardy, Fassbender and Cumberbatch. I hope he'll get many great roles in the coming years.
