"smart men don't marry"

he said it as a joke, but was this kind of thinking prevalent in the old days? people who say this nowadays perceive that men get cleaned out in family court, on his assets and income. but was it the same way back then? when i heard him say it, my first thought was the joke seemed out of its time period.

right, plus if i remember correctly, on top of it, the others in the group conceded that point to him, including the oldest guy, the deputy sheriff, which takes you back yet another 50 years since the old guy got married. not likely that staying single was a "cool" thing to do in the old guy's time.
