The writing on Deadwood was absolute poetry, with healthy doses of profanity. True to the period or not, David Milch is a genius.

The way it was explained on the "making of" extra on the Deadwood DVD, was that period correct swearing comes across sounding like Yosemite Sam to modern audiences.
shareThat's incorrect. If you read any letters from during the time period you would know that people cursed a lot. More so than people do today.

1. Watch show.
2. Laugh and tell self, "This is BS".
3. Deny fact that people cursed to high heaven.
4. Look online to verify claim that show is historically accurate.
5. Continue to deny fact.
6. Post reply stating so.
Chicory, the old deputy was former military. The sheriff was proper. I think some were proper in the way that some people act differently when in proper settings or the way people do not use profanity if in a crowd that isn't.
Regardless, it was a nice touch. It really had a huge effect on the movie.

I was raised in the same house as my grandmother who spoke with a patricians accent. We lived in ND but she was from IL. As such, I speak in the same manner. My daughters speak the same way. It's just a way of speaking. No more, no less.
shareI had a classmate in school and he sat to my left. I always called him by his last name, never hist first.
