Subverted Expectations (My favorite!)

Just finished it. Loved the movie! Especially because it went against almost every expectation I formed about it.

- Brooder is a rich man-about-town, and claims to be a bit of a player. Seems lustful of O'Dwyer's wife, constantly calling O'Dwyer "cowboy" in a mocking fashion. All of this would suggest he has had relations with O'Dwyer's wife. Turns out he never banged Samantha, and has a good backstory for being such a jerk.

- Chicory seems to be a dawdling old man on the precipice of dementia, grieving his wife who has been dead for years. Seemingly useless baggage destined to die over the course of this rough brutal mission. Nope!

- O'Dwyer tells his cohorts that it is his choice not to have his leg amputated, and then is put to sleep with opium. Chicory brings out a sawblade and hammer from the medical kit. After the procedure, the sheriff and Chicory are pictured with O'Dwyer behind a bush so you can't see what happened, and then leave. However, you can see blood on Chicory's sleeve, leading at least me to believe that the amputation was undergone against O'Dwyer's will. I actually clapped when he wakes up several scenes later with his leg still intact.

I think I'm missing some, but it's late and I should head to bed. Anyways, great movie with some awesome surprises.

I love these findings you made, and also love to hear that someone enjoyed it as much as I did!
Everything about this film was fantastic, my favorite part about it was the long, meandering dialogue between the characters, with the vocabulary genuine to the time. Love it all, actually.
