I'm really surprised it seems no one got this already (maybe inside any threads?) but each one of the main characters plays a Bible Horseman. Patrick Wilson is Pestilence, Richard Jenkins is Hunger, Kurt Russell is War and Matthew Fox is Death. It's quite subtle, but the hints are in the first half o the film. To add more religious layers, there are other subtle references as "all I see is a snake on a tree", a reference to the original sin.

I'm half through the movie - didn't catch it, in theaters - and I couldn't resist checking this out...

Interesting observation however how do you connect Russell to War? Richard Jenkins (the backup deputy lol luv that) was the only one who had been to war (the civil i assume). But def allot of religious overtones...and not slakmed our throat either. If one recalls this all started due to a white mans desecration of a religious site. However man oh man...tbe shot of those Cave Dweller females .. (Shudder) ..personally i felt THAT was the most shocking imagery in the film.
