What did Chicory do to Arthur's leg?

During this scene, Chicory was going to "set" his leg. I thought he had a broken bone or something. Then we see a huge knife and hammer? and I think OK - they're going to amputate. He whacks the Arthur's leg, but then when he wake's up, psych! he still as a leg. And apparently, he's no worse off than before. WTF?

It looked like he had a compound fracture and he used the hammer to hit the bone back into the leg and set the bone to heal.
That broken leg was the most unrealistic part of the movie.
