The ending plot hole (spoilers)

Great movie!

Did I miss something though, how did Arthur get in the cave up that hill? Did he blow the whistle thing? Would the savages really just pull something up without checking?

And what did the sheriff mean by 'have a talk with Arthur'? Was he suggesting making Arthur the new sheriff?

reply

Remember him looking down at the burial site? It is presumed he found a back way into the cave.

The answer to question number two is yes - knowing he won't make it, he suggests that Chiceroy will become the new sheriff.

Arthur came in the back entrance of the cave, the same way they exited; remember them passing the two amputated, pregnant, blind troglodyte women? That was the back way in. I'm guessing the rear entrance wasn't a vertical cliff face, still not an easy thing for him to do with a compound fractured leg.

As for what sheriff says to Chicory, about him talking to Arther, I took it as him telling Arthur he needed to have his leg amputated otherwise he'd die of gangrene. That's just me, though; could be the aforementioned, too.

First question answered. Though it's not stated, we can assume he wants Arthur to be Sheriff.

It's still a plot hole. WTF would the trogs drag people up the hill (cliff?) face when there is another entrance so easy even a cripple can make it? I realise they are supposed to be insanely stupid, but c'mon, that beggars belief.

'Talk to Arthur' I think means to talk about his wife having been raped. If Arthur doesn't die or lose his leg he is likely to be lame. Not exactly law enforcement material. And to suggest he follow up his death defying adventure by taking on a profession that keeps him in harm's way is idiotic. And we know how Arthur's wife feels about idiots.

reply

Wait, she was raped? I missed that completely? Was it implied or said?

reply

"Talk to Arthur", to me, meant about having the leg amputated. I believe that was the plan when they left him at the campsite, but in a scene we did not see, I expect they talked it over and figured he was likely to die anyway, amputation or no. Why make him suffer even more in his last days?

There was zero evidence that Samantha was raped. We are just conditioned to assume that in violent movies.

I wasn't sure what talk to Arthur meant when I watched it but there is a deleted ending scene where Chicory asks Arthur to be the new sheriff.
