Couldn't it have been the old man is still hopeful that Kurt Rusell still might have made it and places the white rock for Russell to find his way home even if it's just for himself feeling hopeful?

It could have been.

By this stage of the story I think that most viewers are still in shock after the scalping and extreme mutilation.

Lol Yeah I know ... Maybe the character of Richard Jenkins was also in shock in the movie and didn't think straight anymore ...

I actually took it, with the wry smile on his face after the 3rd gunshot is heard (and earlier them claiming there were 3 males left in the clan) that he feels there is no threat anymore because they have all been wiped out so he throws his "weapon" away.

I mean he would be an IMBECILE if he thought there was any chance of the sheriff surviving when he was gasping for the last breaths of his life when they left him.

I agree the rock was meant to be a weapon not a path marker. After hearing the third shot, Chickory knew it was safe and chucked the rock.
