Why do you like the character Rey?
I am always defending reasons why I do not like the character but have yet to hear very many compelling or well thought out reasons for why people like the character. So this is my question if you like Rey and defend the character, Why?
I have 4 theories for why people like her:
1. She was the first female jedi lead in Star Wars and the actress they found charming and
falsely associated the actress's charm with the characters charisma.
2. Rey was so grossly overpowered and so much attention given to her that the audience is forced to consider her special but the fact that we are given absolutely no proof, development or reason for either the overpowering or the attention/focus she got it left something to be desired. The desire is a backstory that connects it all and gives meaning to her as a character. Because the character herself is so empty (and if you really think about it she is) the audience assumes she has to be related to someone we know and love already.
This gives life to empty but fun speculation that she is a daughter/granddaughter of Luke, Han, Obi-wan, or even Palpatine. People want to love Rey because the movie told them to, but gave us nothing to even like; so people connect her to a character they already like so they can like her by association.
3. Everyone in the film likes her and the film gives her so much attention and focus that in a world in which a lot of people are narcissistic and attention seeking found a sense of wish fulfillment in the character.
4. Marketing and protection from criticism. There is a trend in movies over the last few years to pretend like female action stars are a new thing. So studios cast females to showcase a delusion of diversity. Also a large number of feminist and social justice warriors will defend this delusion and cast any criticism of the character or film as a result of sexism or bigotry.
What do you all think? if you like the character what are your reasons?
