I was watching a video on youtube by David Stewart. In it he discussed breakdown of film ratings into categories. So for fun I am going to do it for The force awakens. The categories I will use is 1. production quality/Special effects 2. Pacing/Editing 3. Writing 4. Characters 5. Acting 6. Action Choreography 7. Cinematography 8. Sound Editing/Effects 9. Music. So here it goes
If you want more explanation of why I rated what I rated, wish to make your own ratings, or even suggest other categories that I may have neglecting. Let me know. Let's see how this goes.
Lol True that, I wish we could go negative on a 1 to 10 scale.
Since our rating were mostly similar I am curious where we differed signficantly.
For example action choreography you rated far below mine. I was not being generous on my rating, though I thought the fast cute editing during the action scenes was poorly done, the actual fighting choreography I thought was pretty good. For example, despite the stupidity of the outcomes, the lightsaber battles I thought were well choreographed. Same for most of the shooting and 'space battle' scenes, despite some poor writing and quick frame editing the actual choreography I thought was good. What was it about the action choreography you thought different?
Also the music, I thought it was John Williams most uninspired sound I have ever heard. Not necessarily terrible but just very underwhelming. What made you think it was better?
I thought the score was great overall and especially did a great job of interweaving the iconic Star Wars themes with the new ones. Not easy to maintain the needed familiarity without being repetitive and boring, but he did it. I really loved Rey's theme.
The lightsaber battles should have ended in about 15 seconds with Finn and Rey filleted in several pieces. Maybe that is more a knock on the story than it is on the choreography per se.

That could be. I may need to take a listen to it again, maybe without actually watching the film with it. The issue I had was as I watched the film, no melody stood out to me. Music was always to predominate in the star wars films that it brought a whole epic feel that I just did not hear in the Force awakens. it is possible though I was just so distracted by the terrible story telling that I did not notice the music.

Oh, this I definitely agree with. it should have been over in 15 seconds. There is no excuse for Finn and Rey coming even close to holding their own; and even more ridiculous Rey actually winning. However as you pointed out that is a knock on the story/writing. Not so much the actual choreography. if you take the story context out and look just at the battle choreography, at least i think, it is really really good. In my opinion better than most of the stuff in the prequels. Now it is hard to see it because of the crappy story context(and the stupid "the force?" pause moment/Rey suddenly getting a super magic power up a la mario brothers mushroom) that goes along with it.
Thanks for the thoughts. This is the type of conversation that makes discussing film fun.
