The Sun is God?
I get that to an artist (especially Tuner), lighting is a key factor in the execution of a masterpiece, but that isn't enough of an explanation for the last line. What did it mean to you? Because I sure as hell don't know!

'Sublime' here means awe-inspiring, savage grandeur, a natural world unmastered by man, evidence of the power of God – a theme that romanticist artists and poets were exploring in this period. To Turner, light was the emanation of God's spirit and this was why he focused the subject matter of his later paintings by leaving out distractions such as solid objects and detail, concentrating on the play of light on water, the radiance of skies and fires. Although these late paintings appear to be 'impressionistic' and therefore a forerunner of the French school, Turner was striving for expression of spirituality in the world, rather than responding primarily to optical phenomena.
Awesome! You and the person above really helped me out. Thanks!
We exist in this place through perception. What we perceive is our reality and therefore our existence. God is what allows us to perceive, to exist, to create because God creates the field of dreams. Our sun, on earth, therefore, is the source of our perception, existence, and creation. From earth, at least, this must be true.
Very cool perspective

I noticed that when explaining his methods on two different occasions, Turner mentions the sun as Helios and Apollo, deities of the golden orb. Without the sun, painting would not be possible. Art was his life, the sun made art possible, the sun was the source of life. Sadly, Turner was going to a place where there is no sun as he spoke those last words.
Really? Did he go to hell then? If not light would be very much present where he went. :-)
shareThere probably would be no sunlight in heaven, since it is in a different realm.
Zardoz (1974) has spoken!
My top 100 http://www.imdb.com/list/ls079512886/
They were the last words Turner spoke.
