James drug use

Even though the film never really mentioned James being under the influence of drugs but I am guessing he had a drug problem particularly when he act Deirdre after seeing a white man look at his wife's boobs.

This wasone of the weaker points in the movie we thought. I get that you cant include EVERYTHING from his life or it would be a 6 hour movie. But to not include what was arguably his biggest vice was a bit shortsighted.

They portrayed him as human and flawed, why not include his affinity for drugs too?

Is...is this even a real question? It obviously doesn't need to be graphic, but it needs to be included, yes. It'd be like making a movie of Bill Clinton's life and leaving out the Lewinski scandal.

It's not really a biopic if you don't include the biggest events of their life...

The joint he laced wasn't enough?

reply

Yeah, that part showed his drug use, but it was shown as his life in the late 80s. I had understood he had a substance abuse issue longer than that... I expected it to be expressed when his money issues were mentioned in the movie.

Here's what the son says about James and drug use:

■James Brown was using crack cocaine up to the end. Daryl, who had his own struggles with drugs, would lecture his father: “This will kill you.”

They very explicitly showed him lacing a joint with Angel Dust and subsequently going on a joy ride while running from police and looking obviously high on something.

Yep. That was as close as the estate was going let them show of Brown and his drug problem. The same with him beating on his wives. That's just my interpretation of seeing how far they would let James Brown estate show into his life.
