Ray or Get on Up
The movie about Ray Charles was way better than this biography about James Brown. It was more entertaining, better songs and story IMO..anyone agree?

shareThe script 'Ray' was just a much better story and gave a more accurate overall view of Mr. Charles life.
'Get on up' was quite entertaining, but unfortunately there were wayyy too many gaps in some of the incredible events that took place... Of course in a good bio you wanna show the good and bad, but don't omit the civil rights issues he was most vocal about, and the most glaring omission of all was the impact the song 'Say It Loud' had on communities all across this country. I grew up in the UK and am only in my 30s and I knew about it. That's how strong a message that song sent. It went global.
Spike was hired to do the film, but some how that didn't work out. And I wonder if it had to do with Spike wanting to cast Wesley Snipes as JB.
Performance-wise, however, I prefer Chadwick's James Brown to Jamie Fox's Ray. I know he won an Oscar, and he did look a lot like Ray but... just my take.
Hands down, Ray!
shareRAY..no competition. Get on up was average.

I finally got to watch this movie last night after anxiously awaiting for it to finally come out on DVD. While I was very impressed by the actor's portrayal of James Brown, the actual movie was just OK for me. For one I was not a fan of the way the film kept skipping around chronologically. One minute James is a kid next he's very famous, then still up and coming, then a kid again. And they really lost me with the whole breaking the fourth wall thing. For the most part they got the performance scenes down, but they felt too short. I thought that his appearance on the T.A.M.I show could have been portrayed better. Just look that performance up on YouTube and you'll see what I mean. Overall good but not great movie, doesn't hold a candle to Ray, but I don't blame the actors for that
I would say that the Ray was the stronger movie.
shareI think both are decent movies. However Get On Up was more entertaining to me.
shareI got more laughs out of James Brown. Ray slipped into a pattern. Female trouble, hit record, drug use. Female trouble, hit record, drug use.
Jamie Fox did a great job as Ray. The out of order scenes in Get On Up, made the whole movie seem inconsistent. James Brown was innovative, he had a really rough childhood, but he became a real d!ck. Oh, and he got his style from black gospel. And he went to Vietnam. All over the place.
