Jake is the worst and least funny character on the show

The star of the show should be the best character, but Jake is actually the least funny and most annoying character IMO.

A lot of people would agree with you, but he doesn't hurt the show.

What sucks is he would actually be very funny if he wasn't so over the top.

reply

Yeah, but that's basically his schtick. Go see Storks if you want to see him with a little more range in his voice acting.

No he's not. I find Jake hilarious.

He's a polarizing character, you either love him or you don't. Either way, the show wouldn't be as good without him.

I honestly don't see what's polarizing about him. At the beginning of the series, sure he was a little too obnoxious, but they toned him down by middle of the 1st season. I mean Andre Braugher deadpan would not be half as hilarious if he was not playing off Samberg's excitable character. His desire to be an action hero cop makes him a pretty relatable character because who doesn't want to be an action hero cop.

He's a caricatured clown, and is playing it like a caricatured clown. My assumption is that the people who don't particularly like Jake probably like Gina, and the fans of Jake probably don't like Gina. Gina's a caricature, but she doesn't play it like a caricature. That's why she works and Jake often doesn't. But again, the show would be worse without Jake, no question about it.

But the thing is that he's not a caricature or a clown. So that description really doesn't make much sense to me. He's a pretty well rounded character.

I'm a fan of a lot of Samberg's work, but the strange thing is that I have to agree with you. He's funny at times and I dont think the show would've come quite as far without him, but he gets on my nerves in the earlier seasons. He always ends up meaning well, but it's just the rude and obnoxious lines coupled with the way he treats Charles that grates my nerves. I also wonder how much of real Andy Samberg is bleeding through the character. As in how much are written lines and how much are improvised.... Some part of me really thinks he's a douche IRL. He may even fancy himself a great looking guy. Where he got that impression, I'll never know... eek.

I love Andy and think he has amazing comic timing

Samberg is the reason I started watching the show, I think he's a funny guy and like all his previous work. He plays the same character in just about everything he does but I find it humorous.

I love Jake. But you are wrong that the star should be the best character, biggest example i can think of is HIMYM, Ted is annoying and the least likeable character yet still the so called star of the show.
