If the plane's fuel is all gone, i would think that the plane doesn't glide down. that it would drop like a rock due to not having any engines and the weight of the plane.

No, planes can glide quite well. For example, in 1983, a 767 glided safely at an abandoned air strip after running out of fuel due to an English/metric conversion error:

In fact, even in a normal landing, the plane is pretty close to gliding, as the engines are providing very little thrust at the point the plane flares.
