Especially if the 12-year old is the son of a physics professor capable of inventing time travel and himself grows up to be an Air Force pilot entrusted with a time-traveling jet.

He was supposed to be extraordinarily smart, in other words.

Agree. Who has more wisdom at 12 then whatever the older Adam is. My 12 year old self was an idiot. This film was more stupid the more I think about it.
