Well this film certainly took me by surprise...
For the name of the title, 'Atomic Blonde'...I really didn't have any high expectations for this film. In fact, I was expecting it to be terrible. But I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, I liked the overall setting and time-period of the film. I liked the 1980's retro theme. And I've always liked Charlize Theron as an actress, ever since her role in the film Monster. She's a terrific actress.
I heard a lot of people saying that this film was pretentious (which is a word I hate using when it comes to describing films, seeing how that's a rather vague way of describing a movie). And others have described Atomic Blonde as a film that takes itself too seriously. Though, I must admit, on some terms...maybe those statements hold some truth. This film did take itself a tad bit too seriously at times, with the over-the-top story line. There were certain aspects of the plot that just lost me. I think there were certain portions of the film that sort of dragged on way too long, kind of making me lose interest.
But with that being said, this film still had a lot of upsides. I thought the soundtrack was great and really fitting. I thought Theron delivered a pretty good performance. And most importantly, I thought the cinematography involved with the fights, the killing, and the violence was just great (almost similar to the fight scenes from The Raid 2).
Is it the greatest movie ever made? No. But it's worth at least one viewing.
