Last scene ( huge spoiler)

I saw the movie a few days ago. In the last scene, did the former wife of samir (selin) press his hand or not? I concentrated a lot but I saw no movements whatsoever, but I read a review that said: she DID press samir's hand.Which one happened? I'm really confused . please help me!

That a tear falls that Samir can't see is definite.

I believe the degree to which Celine is responding to Samir's request to squeeze his hand is meant to be uncertain to both Samir and to us. Her hand is wrapped around his thumb, but not tightly. Are they in that posture because of what Samir did in holding her hand? I think Samir is going leave wondering whether Celine did so something akin to squeezing his hand, or whether he imagined it.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.

Yes, a tear. Beautifully done. He does not see it. I don't think she grips his hand -- she is unable. She is trapped in a body that she has no control over, and the only indication of it is hidden from everyone except the movie audience. IMO

I agree with your take. I do wish I hadn't heard before seeing the movie that something major happens in the final scene. It was very distracting to wonder what was coming throughout the rest of the movie.

I don't think it matters whether she squeezed his hand or not. In terms of the movie what matters is HE wanted her to.

Excellent point, NBborn. I have just seen the movie and was concentrating on her hand not her cheek so did not see the tear.

I may watch the final scene again, however I think your reflection on the scene says it all.

In case anyone reading this thread still not aware of the extra feature of 30+ minutes interview of Farhadi included in the DVD. This single tear drop at the final scene was discussed in great details during the interview. It seems this tear drop signaled perhaps her very last 'communication' with her husband Samir. And sadly he did not see it just like almost everyone else in the audience since we are all concentrating on whether her hand will make any slightest response. It seems even near her last breath, no one around her ever noticed her torment and struggle, not even her own husband.

What I found interesting about the hand scene was the call back to a previous scene in the film. When Samir and Marie are in the car and Samir has his hand on the gearstick…Marie puts her hand over his and grips it as she closes her eyes and maybe drifts off for a second. It’s like an eerie foreshadowing of the final scene. I love these kinds of touches that add to the complexity of the drama.
