Uninteresting

I love the Seven Samurai and the 1960 Magnificent Seven. I was wary to see this at first. The main reason for this is because if all the poor remakes recently being released (recently being since 2006- yep, I'm old).

The cast is decent. Three of my favorite actors are in this, Washington, Hawk, and D'Onofrio. Lee Byung-Hun was great in the good, the Bad, and the wierd as well as I saw the Devil. I don't understand why people like Chis Pratt. I've seen him do fine in a few movies but he's totally miscast in this. Must be a starlord thing (he was in marvel. Don't worry about consistency).

The plot is the same, but less interesting. The characters are given okay backstories, but I think it was handled better in the 60 version.

It's overly slow and uninteresting. The action is okay, but I think you'd be better off with the original Seven Samurai or the 60 version.

Some people complain about the villian. It's true that Eli Wallach was charismatic and interesting. The Seven Samurai didn't put too much emphasis on this. That's why it doesn't bother me here. It's hard to surprass Wallach and it helps to establish a villian. So they did what they could. It's just okay.

It's not great or terrible. It's forgettable and uninteresting.

I LIKED THE MOVIE...QUITE A BIT...I AM A CHRIS PRATT FAN AS WELL...HAVE BEEN SINCE HE WAS FAT AND DOING SUPPORTING COMEDIC ROLES...PARKS AND REC SOLIDIFIED HIM AS A FAVORITE...I AM ALSO A STEVE MCQUEEN SUPERFAN AND HAVE SEEN THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN DOZENS OF TIMES...THE REMAKE FELT FRESH AND EXCITING TO ME...I WILL ALSO MENTION MY 71 YEAR OLD FATHER WHO WAS THE ONE WHO TOLD ME TO WATCH THE ORIGINAL MAGNIFICENT 7 WHEN I WAS JUST A BOY LOVED THE REMAKE.

What are your thoughts on 3:10 to Yuma?

reply

THE ORIGINAL IS A CLASSIC...THE REMAKE IS EVEN BETTER.

SEVEN AND YUMA MIGHT BE THE TWO BEST WESTERN REMAKES EVER.

THREE BEST WITH TRUE GRIT.

I just rewatched the remake and really liked it. If you get a chance, check out the Good, the Bad, and the wierd. It's fun.

I LOOKED...THAT MOVIE LOOKS PRETTY DAMN AWESOME...I RECOGNIZE A LOT OF THE CAST FROM OTHER STUFF I ENJOYED AS WELL.

You made me laugh! Not because of your review of the film, but because of this line: "The main reason for this is because if all the poor remakes recently being released (recently being since 2006- yep, I'm old).

You say "yep, I'm old"
to you 2006 is old. That tells me that you aren't old.
I was born in 1951. Now that's old!

I'll conceed as I was born in 82, but appreciate talking movies with you.

What were your thoughts on the 3:10 to Yuma remake? I prefer that one to this one.

reply

I thought it was pretty good. It had interesting characters, especially Russell Crowe's character and Peter Fonda's character. (Were they good? Were they really bad? The lines were blurred quite a bit.)
I have never seen the original 3:10 to Yuma, and watched the new one primarily because Christian Bale was in it.

reply

Yes, it was disappointing. Especially because the script was written by Nic Pizzolatto, the same guy who wrote the script for True Detective. So I expected a little more character development and better dialogue...

reply

I probably shouldn't have liked this film so much, but I did. I didn't have high expectations for it or anything, so that probably helped. I just thought it was a lot of fun, even if it borrowed from a lot of past westerns. I haven't seen the original two, but I'm sure it isn't as good. That doesn't mean this is bad. I thought the characters were really cool. The first half is great, but the second act drags a bit.

You need to watch original!

Their stories explain the world, generation by generations.

It was a decent watch, some great shoot-outs but it did have some bad flaws. I agree about Chris Pratt, he was totally miscast in this. I couldn't take him seriously as a Wild West badass gunslinger. The villain was awful too, completely unsubtle and Sarsgaard hammed it up to the point it became laughable. It's worth a watch for the action scenes though and Denzel and D'Onofrio in particular were excellent.

It was really bad. As uninteresting a modern remake as there has been. Just another in a long line of completely forgettable junk releases.
