Another Hollywood failed remake/reimaging
Can we PLEASE, have some actual character development EVER?
Its a good thing the death scenes for our heroes arent drawn out, emotional rants with someone running through a hail of gunfire to their downed body, (the worst is when they are just out in the middle of the open and the enemy ignores them like theyre a medic) just so we can have some emotional resolution as they slip away. I call it the LOTR affect and its getting to be untenable....(Rogue One does this).
The problems w/ this movie have been pointed out all over this site
First, this is a REMAKE/REIMAGING of the Magnificent 7, which was made in 1960, and NOT the Asian Samurai movie that inspired the original. So its going to take its liberties.
Multi-cultural 7 and the PC agenda. At the beginning when the white folks church is set on fire, some blacks adorned in slave-like attire come running out of nowhere to help put out the fire, but the baddies wont let them. Its a small scene, like the "white people food" and "Good we got us a Mexican" but it says a lot about what the Director thinks when it pertains to race relations in America. He also has a character lement he cant kill Indians for money anymore.
Instead, the Director is PC and just has everyone sing "CUMBAYA", instead of actually building trust between our heroes it is just mutually accepted. Im sorry but 1860-1880 is different time period compared to now, which makes our diverse groups make-up hard to swallow. There should have been more scenes that developed our posse's trust and bond, especially with each others diverse backgrounds but it never happens, it is just "so". Instead of a pairing of Lone Ranger and a Tonto kind of believable friendship, we get one between an ex-Confederate soldier and and Asian guy who is good with knives. Not implausible, but hard to swallow when you look at this diverse group.
Also, look at the villains, save for one out of place Native Indian, all the villains are white, while our heroic crew touches all the cultural and ethnic bases, including a young busty widower dressed as a prostitute, who in the end gets to be a little Mary Sue. (Remember she cant hit a stationary log from 40-50 yards, but then during the gun battle she hits moving targets from that distance.)
The terrible Physics behind the Gattlin Gun. (Not the timing of when it was brought out during the battle) A Gattlin gun would spray from that distance, Im not saying the bullets wouldnt get there, Im saying they wouldnt be bunched up like they were. When watching its clear someone is standing outside from like 20-30 feet spraying bullets through the walls.
The gun battle and the endless "baddie" extras coming out of every crack was absurd, half of them got blown up right away, but they kept coming while all the horses they rode in on magically disappeared. Also, I thought Reaubashaw (sp?), was a sharp shooter with the rifle, when the PTSD overtakes him he flees, now when I see this I think the story will have him, turn around find a nice spot and start taking out the Detectives grouped around the Gattlin Gun, but nope, they decide to sacrifice Chris Pratt instead in a wholly unsatisfying scene. They dont expand on his characters talent, they ignore his PTSD, and give him a martyrs death instead.
Villain - Im supposed to believe that Peter Sarsgaard is OLDER then Denzel Washington, or that they are the same age even? If the villain slaughtered his mother and sisters, he would be younger then this Robber Baron villian, or close to same age. Hes not, the age discrepancy is obvious. His death scene is preposterous, no way he would ride into town with just two man after the town kicked his ass, he basically just gives up, when in real life he would turn and flee and the good guys would need to give chase....Instead we get a WEAK and unsatisfying Conclusion.
Lastly, Our villain says, "America was built on Capitalism".
Karl MArx published the Communist Manifesto in Europe in 1848, long after Americas founding, which is when the term "Capitalism" was coined. It is SERIOUSLY DOUBTFUL to incredulous that a Robber Baron just 20-25 years later would quote a term that is derogatory to them. The FACT is America was formed as a Laissez-Faire Economy, or translated, Free Market Economy. Once again, the liberal PC agenda rears its ugly head and gets it WRONG.
This movie was entertaining, I grant it that, but it could have been better with a good director and good script...but alas, we just have a poorly done Action/Western remake.
