If I'd never seen the original. . .
. . .I would have enjoyed the remake much more. James Horner was an amazing composer, but he failed to do what Elmer Bernstein did in the original, which was to make the soundtrack another character, so to speak. It was hard to get that music out of your head and you didn't want to. This reboot is a solid western, plenty of action, nice performances, but Yul, Steve, James, Robert and Eli gave perfect performances. Not so the case with the remake. Denzel wasn't his usual charismatic self, Chris Pratt didn't measure up to other of his smart-alec performances and Ethan always seemed to be acting, in a very non-believable way, IMHO. The only standout performance to me, no surprise there, was an almost unrecognizable, corpulent, Vincent. And that weird shmo-hawk on the Native American actor! Too funny, once I read the reason for that 'do in the Trivia section. Also, it doesn't take minutes to reload a Gatling gun, you just slip in a new gravity fed magazine, I mean this isn't the first Gatling gun movie, that was a stupid plot device. Glad I only spent two bucks at Redbox, not boxoffice prices. The cinematography was amazing, however.
