I didn't understand the meaning or usage of the red pinwheels. They made a point of the children making them and coloring them, but what were they used for?

shareI thought that too. However it looked like the man operating the explosives was in a trench and could not see them. I figured the men in the bell tower would ring the bell when the cavalry passed the windmills and that would tell the explosives guy when to detonate. Not really sure why they hung the bell back up if that was not the plan...
