Is this film agenda-filled garbage or a fun time at the movies?

Today, we live in a world where the word that rhymes with "baggot" gets censored in the broadcast version of "Wolf of Wall Street" but all of the nudity, sex, drug use, and profanity remained untouched - at least on the channel I watched it on the other night. "Magnificent 7" sounds fairly lame from what I have read. Are there any positive reviews from IMDb readers out there, or should I continue to not support Hollywood''s garbage factory by streaming movies for free if they aren't worth paying to see? M-7 looks like safe and forgettable PC crapola.

I don't know how to respond to this, except to say that it is a fun, enjoyable action movie with a great cast.

I'm with you. OP, you can read my review to see what I thought of it. A lot of aspects to like if you ask me.

The film had no agenda. It's not meant to be deep. It's just a good, old-fashioned fun Western.

reply

It's a pretty straight forward movie, you can tell from the trailer if you will like it or not. I liked it, fun cast, blazing action, could have used more character building moments, but a fun time for me.

Why are the filmmakers reluctant to use the original score?

reply

I'm just guessing they wanted a more modern sound despite the Western setting, they did use the original before the end credits.

reply

I notice that in most remakes or reboots, they either tease the original soundtrack or completely "modernize" the sound. The granddaddy of this practice was the god-awful soundtrack created for the 80's reboot of 'Dragnet'. The current version of 'Hawaii 5-0' bastardized the original (and great) theme as well. Just observations.

I think it would've been a fun risk for the filmmakers to use the same soundtrack as the original "Magnificent 7" - only re-recorded, once again, using an orchestra. Filmmakers need not fear the original source material. Rather, they should embrace it. Typically, remakes and reboots are too weak to leave a mark on their own anyway. This film will never have the staying power of "7 Samurai" or "M7 1960".

reply

Two reasons. It didnt fit the tone of the film and its janes horners final score before he died in a plane crash.

As somebody who frequently gets annoyed at PC and Liberal trends in movies (Don't get me started on Zootopia) I didn't sense any sort of agenda in this flick. In fact, I enjoyed the fact that a diverse cast was able to "bust balls" in a way that seems to be on the decline. If political correctness is the thing that's holding you back from checking this film out, I'd say go ahead and see it. It isn't monumental by any means, but you'll enjoy your 2 hours a hell of a lot more than you would with most modern releases.

The movie itself was fun, but the fact that it was almost completely bloodless just to assure the PG-13 rating kinda turned me off.

reply

It's a pretty hard PG-13 for all that. The 1960 movie isn't exactly a gritty and violent epic either.

reply

Yeah but the 1960 version was a GOOD movie unlike this one.

reply

I love the original but this was still a solid movie

reply

Don't kid yourself. This was good movie. The 1960 one was a great movie though. And Seven Samurai towers over both.

reply

The first third it was ok, the second third was ok but nothing really happened, the last third was dumber than a bag of hammers.

The original was much better.

The Seven Samurai was in another league.

Stop whining like a rhymes-with-baggot over the "PC agenda".

IMO, it sounds like you are too sensitive to watch this film. You may burst into tears at the sight of a black cowboy.

Precisely.

I'm sorry you're afraid. If you are a bigot, that's OK. If you hate people that are Tlinget, that's OK. If you hate Eurasian people, that's OK. If you hate me based on my skin color, that's OK. If you hate that, though I look white, I turn dark as the ace of spades in the sun due to my Sami ancestry, that's OK. If you hate that I have a cousin that is black due to marriage, that's OK.

Just say it: "I'm OK"

Say it to yourself: "I'm OK"

I'll say it: I'm OK

I'm sure you and I can be best friends. If you live in town, we could go out for beer or tea depending on your preference.

We're all cool little kitties having a good time typing on the Internet about movies and we'll survive.
