PG-13: Are teenagers really going to watch this film?

I'm wondering: the rating seems to indicate the studio counts on teenagers to go watch this film. Does that make sense?

I believe most fans of Westerns (as well as fans of Denzel and Ethan) are adults. The trailers also make this look like a very violent film.

I think Pratt is almost the only reason kids would want to watch this (because of Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World).

Was it a smart choice to aim for a PG-13 with this film? Or could it end up alienating adults and fans of Fuqua's films while failing to speak to the desired teen crowd?

What are your thoughts?

Teenagers: are you interested in this film? Do you know many fellow teens who are excited for this?

Pratt would be the only reason. The use of rap music is a good way to alienate the old crowd though.

I'm 16 and think this looks really good. I don't know about anyone else though, but that may be because it's summer right now and I don't talk to a lot of people at school.

reply

If you don't mind me asking: do you think it looks good enough that you're actually going to see it in the theater? And do you think this kind of film could be a hit with young people around your age?

reply

Yeah, I'll definitely be seeing this in theaters. It might be a hit with people around my age, but as I said, I honestly don't know at this point.

reply

Cheers, mate. Guess we'll wait and see.

I'm 16 and live in the UK. I want to watch this film because I'm a huge fan of Ethan but denzel, I do not like as much. He's still alright and is a great actor but not my type.

I have spoken to my friends and none of them have heard of this film and none of them know of the original. So I think it was a bad idea to make this a 12a/pg-13.

I'm a 16 year old from California who loves film. Denzel is one of my favorite actors of all time. Fuqoa has an amazing track record thus far. Ethan Hawke is awesome. Can't wait to see them re team in this. But I honestly wish this had been R. It seems to hit the film better. I will still go opening day to the IMAX presentation but I wish they would have given fuqoa the reigns and make an R rated film.

By not making the Indian archer a teen girl the wrecked half the box office

Meh. Its a remake of a classic along the lines of True Grit, a mostly praised remake that was reasonably successful and PG-13. From the look of it, it seems to have the tone of Silverado, another PG-13 film.

Point is, while modern westerns often lend themselves to an R rating, if the movie is good, it doesn't matter.

I'm 15...love westerns, old and new. I'm pumped for it! Love Pratt and D'Onofrio (Both are in Jurassic World), loved the Equalizer, Tears if the Sun and Training day.

However I would've preferred a R (or MA15+ where I live) over a PG13. But It doesn't bother me. I can't wait!

reply

Don't care if teens want to see it, I'm forty-four and can't wait.

reply

Me too, I don't think age should matter, it's a western!

Did they really aim for PG-13? The trailer made it look like an R-rated action comedy.

I know! But yes, they did aim for that rating (Fuqua stated so in an interview) but it seems a bit odd, given how violent this film seems to (want) to be. Also, it seems like most people who want to see it because of Denzel, Ethan or Antoine are more into their R-rated films (because that's the kinds of films they usually do).
