So. The 'original', the 'remake', and the 'remake, redux'...
Tried to watch Kurosawa's 'classic'. Couldn't get past the first twenty minutes, and the prospect of having to watch the rest of it seemed like a fate worse than death. (I was reminded of that nifty Internet rejoinder common with idjits, 'TL:DR')
Tried the 1960 'remake'...and I was laughing so hard at the a) bad plot, b) bad script, c) bad direction of d) bad acting that I hyper-sped through it. Good Lord. (Damn! I totally forgot e) the score.)
(Here's a trivia question for you: Did you know that one of the Executive Producers on this one was also an Executive Producer of the 2016 version?)
Despite its plotting and continuity problems, I do love Fuqua's film. (The initial gunfight is particularly satisfying for me to watch. Again and again and again.)
As a point of interest, I recently viewed the 1969 'True Grit'...and found that to be pretty much unwatchable...even though I saw it at the local drive-in when it was originally released. I also watched the Coen Brothers' 2011 adaptation of the novel...and though I found it flat, flat, flat, it was far more interesting an experience. (Hailee Steinfeld's so-much-better performance than Kim Darby's was just a delight.)
