Goodnight/Billy

I can't be the ONLY person who thought their relationship went a bit deeper than friendship. It was definitely subtext. I really liked the movie overall. Not sure why it's getting so much hate. Even the sequels to the original changed up characters, as did the TV series. It was more of an ode to the original idea than a remake. Been watching incarnations of this since I was little with my Dad, very enjoyable.

I swear that the Asian fellow mouthed "I love you" with his lips just before he died.

reply

YES! Billy was trying to say something as he looked at Goodnights flask.I actually felt bad that Goodnight died alone on the ground when at least they could have been near one another.

reply

It's possible to have blood brothers in arms. I have one that would go through hell for me and I for him. You don't have to be gay to be friends with a man.

I see what your are saying, but, after thought, they're just partners. Goodnight has severe PTSD and Billy is the one who keeps him on the level. Don't worry about it. Just a story.

reply

Yeah, I'd say you are right. It was the Old West. People just weren't gay back then.

reply

They could have been gay too. Either is fine. I thought they were gay when I first watched it, but they don't act like a couple at all when I watched it again. They just act like best friends. There's probably an inside joke about the flask that doesn't show up in the movie.

That's right, and too often people confuse the two, IMO.

It could possibly have been something that didn't show up in the final cut, yes. I think it's probably one of the movie's weaker attempts at a humorous moment. The old "you forgot this" gag shows up in plenty of movies, and I think they just tossed that in there for the sake of tossing it in there. 90% of the film's humor does work, though, so that's a plus.

Except for Brokeback Mountain, a well known cruising area for gay cowboys back in the days

reply

Right, but doesn't 'Brokeback Mountain' take place in a more recent setting than the 1870s?

I'm pretty sure gay people have always existed. They aren't MacBooks or electricity. LOL. of course it didn't bother me in the movie. I just thought it was interesting. I just bought the movie I'm hoping there are some deleted scenes.

reply

That's because they were both turd burglars when they weren't gunfighting.

reply

So Goodnight leaves his gay partner to get shot and possibly killed in the middle of a gun fight, and Billy just lets him leave. If there's a love there of a gay partner they'd follow each other for me. There's a great friendship and respect there, but nothing homosexual for me.
This type of brother in arms friendship is shown in many films and tv.

What nonsense. It's apparent that no one's getting an education these days, other than from reality TV rubbish and Fox News. Hasn't anyone heard of camaraderie? It's a bond that develops between people who go through dangerous/stressful/life-threatening situations together. And then there's male bonding/friendship. Men can be friends with each other, respect each other and yes, even love each other like brothers (even though not actually blood-related), without it making them gay.
