Who else will watch this only for Tatiana Maslany ?

I'm not a fanboy of Tatiana Maslany but her acting in Orphan Black couldn't be better. I've asked myself and discussed on her IMDb board if she could be that good all the time and if a great career was destiny. I guess I'm not the only one with these questions.

To try and answer them I could've checked her ancient roles but they were either in confidential movies (no offense), either minor roles in somehow big movies (like her role in the Vow). There is also the fact that she is probably a far better actress now than some years ago, because of her maturity and her experience on Orphan Black. So checking what she did when she started wouldn't be fair (for the same reason, if you want to know if George Clooney is a good actor, don't watch ER obviously...).

Now since it will be her first big role in a somehow big movie I think I might have some answers or at least the beginning of an answer (cause 1 big tv show + 1 big movie is still too few to 'judge' for sure).

I hope for her she is more successful than many actresses who were big in their respective tv shows but didn't become that big on cinema : Kristen Bell after VM, Gillian Anderson after X files, and these 2 actually are not really making my point compared to the very long list of actresses who simply never made it on the big screen (once again no offense, it's still a career many would like to have), as opposed to KB (Sarah Marshall) and GA (the last king of Scotland).

Of course, Tatiana Maslany is better in Orphan Black than these actresses were on their shows. Plus, if you go beyond acting, I think she also has the potential to please worldwide audience in the current era where 'divas' are not very popular anymore (like Gwyneth Paltrow...), they've been replaced by actresses that have everything (beautiful, nice, fun...) like JLaw. All in all, I may be fooling myself but I would say she has a good chance a becoming big (more than your average tv actress anyway). Seeing Tatiana Maslany at the top would be refreshing, it's hard not to like her even if we only know her through itw and her acting she seems like a nice gal.

Her.... Ummmm..."performance" as "Tony the Tranny" dulls her Orphan Black lustre.... just a tad.

I thought she did the best that she possibly could have. The thing is, in real life, a female-to-male transgender takes hormone therapy for years, lives as a man for years before the possibility of surgery is even on the table; they undergo psychological therapy for years, to ensure they're in a proper state of mind and have no underlying issues. Because these individuals are male, they're more inherently masculine when it comes to to their walk and their gestures; and to top it all off, they usually see a coach to help train their voice to become more masculine (including tone and enunciation/pronunciation, which varies from that of a female). Tatiana didn't go through all that; she had to rely on her own skills to change her voice, gait, mannerisms, and overall attitude. It was pretty impressive, considering.

You should check her out in 'Ginger Snaps 2" She plays Ghost.
A decent but not great movie, but her performance is top notch and the best reason to watch that movie. And if you like Helena in Orphan Black, you will love her performance as Ghost.

'Grown Up Movie Star' is another earlier show that she is great in. She was 24 playing a 14 year old going through all the contradictions of a 14 year old. Won a Sundance Breakout Performance Award for that one.

Don't know what you were referring to when you mentioned 'confidential movies', I don't understand that term.

Check out some of her interviews and Comic Con appearances on YouTube and you will see that she has a great personality and also seems to have a good sense of humor to go with her talents.

As to your question, I don't know if I will watch this movie at all as it does not seem my style of movie, but I do hope she gets critical acclaim and attention for her role in it as she is that good.

She was great in Picture Day. A true chameleon. Will be interesting to see how she goes in a more simple role.

But she's rather delightful as a person so would love to see her become a star!

I find ryan Reynolds' movies difficult to watch so hopefully this cast, and it seems good, can overcome that

reply

I'm interested to check it out because of HELEN MIRREN ONLY!

She is as good playing the young Maria Altmann as Ms. Mirren is playing the old one. If her German was not dubbed and she spoke it herself, then her German was also flawless.

I take your point about tv stars who can't really achieve the same on big screen...
but don't put Gillian Anderson on that list--
I think she is just a "big" as she wants to be...
she chose to live in England after "XFiles" success and probably turned away more work than many actresses would ever be offered...

The fact that she hasn't been a "major" movie star is more from her choice than the movie business's...

Hadn't heard of her until today. Nice and quietly, hot.
