Klezmer music?
In the wedding scene--would such an assimilated family have had Klezmer music? Memoirs like Stefan Zweig's and Arthur Schnitzler's make it seem as though that would not have been part of such a family's celebration.

shareMaybe they just liked the music? It strikes me that a secular Jewish family then might have enjoyed klezmer music at a wedding in much the same way that a secular Jewish person now might go to a deli and eat a Reuben sandwich--a concoction that is both definitionally unkosher and strongly identified as culturally "Jewish."
