Why did they need to give Helen Mirren dark contact lenses for the movie? They could have just selected an actress with the same colour eyes to play her younger self.

Most Jews have dark hair and brown eyes, hence the darker contact lenses and tinted hair to enhance authenticity.

That's just not true … Randy Schoenberg is a ginger with hazel eyes … just as a "for instance" …

That's an extreme wrong generalization. Ashkenazi Jews (those that come from Europe) come in all colors and types; many could pass for German, Polish, etc.

The real Maria Altmann had brown eyes (you could see it in the picture of her that they showed at the end of the movie). That is the answer.
