Why did they get an English-speaking Canadian actress to play the German-speaking young Maria Altmann? She doesn't look like a young Helen Mirren, nor is she from Austria or Germany. She is amazing, but it seems like a random casting decision.

sharei kinda agree that helen and tatiana don't look that much alike. if you need a look alike then jennifer lawrence would have been a better choice but this is about acting not looks. tatiana can act. also helen is also not from austria or germany, again acting. finally, the biggest difference between the two is that a young tatiana mostly keeps her clothes on where a young helen had serious problems with wearing clothes in her early movies. "Caligula", "Savage Messiah" to name a few, a very few. big fan.

shareI think maslany did a great job as the young Maria - and she's no slouch at speaking with accents. I don't think her face is a whole lot like Helen Mirren, but she's the right physical type - same height etc.
