Still haven't got around to a huge amount of stuff from last year though.
Had I made a top 10 list, Carol wouldn´t have made the cut and yet I found it fascinating, nuanced and subtle, an excellent fit for a very lavishing period.
Rooney Mara should have won the award for Best Actress, she´s a very underrated actress.
Didn´t you get a chance to see Ex machina, The Revenant or Embrace of the Serpent?
I've seen the first two and I'm honestly not that fussed on them, although they were definitely good at the very least. Embrace of the Serpent definitely looks interesting, though, and I've heard great things about it.
- Carol - Spotlight - Room - Brooklyn - The Imitation Game - Song of the Sea - Cinderella - Inside Out - Sicario - The Good Dinosaur - The Danish Girl - The Lady In The Van - Colonia - The Dressmaker - Truth
Truly, they were great. In my opinion,Embrace of the Serpent, The Revenant and Mad Max deserved it´s accolades and they will certainly stand the test of time.
As for Carol, it was aesthetically beautiful and it´s slow burning story led up to two very nuanced performances, however, it didn´t resonate with me that much on an emotional level and in the end I was hoping to get more out of it but it´s sheer beauty was so inxocating that I couldn´t help but be inmersed in it´s surroundings which is why I consider it one of the best films of the year.

It's difficult to stay true to the calender year 2015 because of different release dates in different countries. Just for example, eliuson, your favourite movie, El abrazo de la serpiente (2015), was released in my country (Germany) two weeks ago! It looks very interesting, but it was impossible for me to find any copy of this movie online. So there was no chance for me to watch this one in 2015 (if I'm lucky, I'm going to watch it tomorrow ).
Also, Darbareye Elly (2009) was shown at festivals around the world since 2009, but it was only until last year that it got a wide release in US theaters. I never had the chance to catch this marvel of a film anywhere before; that's why I added it here in my list of 2015. Room (2015) and Darbareye Elly (2009) are by far my favourite movies from last year - they're almost a 10 in my ratings.
About Ex Machina (2015): I liked it, Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander are terrific. However, I liked Advantageous (2015) a bit more. Both are kind of similar in my opinion, but I thought much longer about the latter.
About The Revenant (2015): I didn't like it very much. The scene at the beginning when the natives attack the group of hunters was shot beautifully, and the landscape was framed fantastically. But the overall story was very thin, I didn't care for any single character (not even for the bear), and I wasn't really moved by the tragedy of him losing his beloved son and getting revenge. For me, there was something missing what I would call magic, imaginability or genuineness - it felt very empty. While I watched it, I thought several times about Atanarjuat (2001), a quite similar movie I watched several years ago and I really liked very much. There are still some scenes I remember quite vividly; I don't think that will happen with The Revenant (2015).
About Carol (2015): I like it quite a lot, the cinematography is terrific. But the story and the characters seem too idealized to me; it lacks of interpersonal drama despite the situation and time those characters lived in. It's just not good enough to make my list; I like all the other movies more.

What you said in the first line is true, Janar - Foxcatcher was one of my favourite movies of 2015, but from the point of view of American movie-goers it's a 2014 film. Similarly, The Big Short was released in the UK in January or February 2016, so for me it doesn't "qualify". My top 5 of 2015 would have been The Homesman; Macbeth; Ex Machina; Clouds of Sils Maria; Foxcatcher - but I saw Carol 2 days ago so I feel I would have to fit that in somehow.

Yes, it's similar here in Germany with so many movies from the US. I remember that I watched Room (2015) near the end of last year and was overwhelmed - but it started in German cinemas not until mid-March this year! This delay is such a shame - I don't get it.
On the other hand: The good thing about these kind of better known movies like Foxcatcher (2014), The Big Short (2015) or Room (2015) is that you're able to watch it anyway in some way online. I know about so many great movies that never played in a theatre around here, or movies that were never released in my region, and that I can't find online. Or they're unavailable from my country - that hurts even more, because there's little to no chance to ever watch them.
