3-1/2 months. Not three years.
The night of December 31, 1952 they made love for first time. Next day is January 1, 1953. Carol gets telegram from Abby about detective. They return to Chicago. They spent the night at the Drake Hotel. The next morning, January 2, Therese wakes up and sees Abby in the hotel room. Carol has returned to New Jersey.
Their last day together was January 1, 1953. They reconciled on April 17, 1953.

Yea, he said "PAST the midway point", I now listened carefully. Stopped the film to see the year in Therese's calender in the beginning part of the film too :-) This time I started to cry only in the last 10 minutes of the film :-D
