shareSimilar in what sense?
If you are interested in the two women coming together, maybe give 'Blue is the Warmest Color' a try. The story is pretty different but the initial coming together of the two women is sensual and tense and there is also an element of the less experienced one finding herself.
One of my favorite films of recent years.
After that it's hard to say. A lot of what gives this one it's particular air is the fact that it was written so long ago and it's a period piece. It has the whole 'forbidden love' thing going for it so the two ladies aren't as publicly demonstrative as they might have been if it took place in this era.
Freeheld has a similar theme. But mind you it's nowhere near as good as Carol.
shareHigh Art (1998)
shareExactly what do you mean by "similar"?
A lesbian romance? A lesbian romance set in the 1950s? A lesbian romance about a older-younger couple? A lesbian story about falling in love? A coming-out lesbian romance? A lesbian romance based on a novel? A lesbian romance based on a true story?
If you haven't already, watch: Desert Hearts, The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister, Kiss Me (a/k/a Kyss Mig), Fire, Imagine Me And You, Tipping the Velvet, Tru Love, Aimee & Jaguar.
Discover a lesbian romance film that isn't often mentioned: November Moon.
And for a good laugh: Codependent Lesbian Space Aliens Seeks Same.
Imagine Me and You was on a few years ago, I'd never heard of it. The cast was good, the two leads were great together, British accents/location.
shareThere is no movie with a lesbian relationship at its center on this level . there are some cute and some interesting ones that I have enjoyed in the past - Saving face , imagine you and me or me and you , kissing Jessica stein and lost and delirious which was especially moving imo
shareI disagree that there's never been another lesbian movie done at this level. I do agree that there's never been another one done like this, but the quality of the relationships depicted is just as good in a couple others I know of...
CAROL is one of my overall top five favorite movies of all time, currently. So, I in no way am trying to dismiss the quality of it. But, I am surprised at the heaps of praise it gets while other very good – in some ways, equally as good or better – films get almost completely ignored.
My suggestions for similar films are:
1. Losing Chase (1996)
2. Habitación en Roma (2010)
I have absolutely no idea why these films are hardly ever mentioned. In fact, apart from myself, I've never seen anyone mention LOSING CHASE in a lesbian movie list that I can recall, which I find very strange indeed.
Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!
