If you are interested in the two women coming together, maybe give 'Blue is the Warmest Color' a try. The story is pretty different but the initial coming together of the two women is sensual and tense and there is also an element of the less experienced one finding herself.

One of my favorite films of recent years.

After that it's hard to say. A lot of what gives this one it's particular air is the fact that it was written so long ago and it's a period piece. It has the whole 'forbidden love' thing going for it so the two ladies aren't as publicly demonstrative as they might have been if it took place in this era.

Freeheld has a similar theme. But mind you it's nowhere near as good as Carol.

There is no movie with a lesbian relationship at its center on this level . there are some cute and some interesting ones that I have enjoyed in the past - Saving face , imagine you and me or me and you , kissing Jessica stein and lost and delirious which was especially moving imo
