Can anyone recommend any other movies that are like this?

It doesn't necessarily have to be about gay people or have the same actors.

Heterosexual romance movies are a dime a dozen. Hetero stories are 99% of what you find when you're in the mood for a movie about two people in love. Do a web search for "romance movies" and you'll get plenty of results.

This movie is a lesbian romance. If you want to know what other movies are lesbian love stories you might consider watching:

Aimee & Jaguar (Germany) - stars Maria Schrader, Juliane Köhler
Bound (USA) - stars Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon
Desert Hearts (USA) - stars Helen Shaver, Patricia Charbonneau
Fire (India) - stars Nandita Das, Shabana Azmi
Kiss Me (Kyss Mig) (Sweden) - stars Ruth Vega Fernandez, Liv Mjönes
Imagine Me & You (United Kingdom) stars Piper Perabo, Lena Headey
Saving Face (USA) - stars Lynn Chen, Michelle Krusiec
The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (United Kingdom) - stars Maxine Peake
Tipping the Velvet (United Kingdom) (originally 3-part miniseries) - stars Rachael Stirling, Keeley Hawes
Tru Love (Canada) - stars Shauna MacDonald, Kate Trotter
The World Unseen (South Africa) - stars Lisa Ray, Sheetal Sheth

I'll toss in a couple of "oldies" for you.
Personal Best, 1982, with Mariel Hemingway, Patrice Donnelly and Scott Glenn. Given when it was made, I give it pretty good marks for daring to look at homosexuality in the sports world.
Lost and Delirious, 2001, with Jessica Pare, Piper Perabo and Mischa Barton. Set in a Canadian private school.

Desert Hearts for sure has the same kind of pace as Carol and younger woman falling in love with older woman. Also Patricia Charbonneau has that same vibe Rooney Mara has in Carol, their characters aren't exactly the same but you can't falling for them and wanting the best for them.

Kiss Me is good but way too much cheating in it when it comes to the two main characters. Both of them cheat on their respective partners. Same with Imagine me and You, Matthew Goode's character is way too likeable and you

Saving Face is great, although half the film is about the mother and her story too. But the Lesbian love story is rather sweet.

I really loved Indignation, which was in theaters this past summer. Like Carol, Indignation is a serious period piece, in which the times -- the zeitgeist, if you will -- is practically a character in the story. Also, the principal actors -- Logan Lerman and Sarah Gadon -- are fantastic.

One thing I think "Indignation" has up on "Carol", actually, is how economical its storytelling is. There is little or no wasted effort, and, while "Indignation" asks a lot of questions, there are no plot head-scratchers (such as, in "Carol", why did Carol have a pistol in her suitcase?).

NY Times says,

“Indignation” might be dismissed as a small, exquisite period piece, but it is so precisely rendered that it gets deeply under your skin. There are a lot of words, and every one counts. You feel the social pressures bearing down on characters who, in accordance with the reticence of the times, tend to withhold their emotions and suffer in silence.

Good luck in your search!

When you ask for recommendations that are similar to Carol, but say that it doesn't have to be a homosexual love story, I don't exactly know what you're wanting – because what separates Carol from the normal romance genre is the fact that it's a lesbian love story.

As for recommendations, I did a thread with recommendations a couple of days ago, though for some reason, my thread has gotten zero replies. Here it is, if you're interested:

But, my number one recommendation is a movie called LOSING CHASE (1996). It's such a fantastic film!

Just to give you a taste of what it's like, here's a lovely video showing parts of it:

Trust me, if you like CAROL you will LOVE Losing Chase (1996)

The people on this board might not want to believe it, but LOSING CHASE has Carol beat by a mile, when it comes to tenderness and a showcase of true love– and I say that as a fan of both films!

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

I mean with the same type setting, atmosphere, feel. I hope this helps. I'm sorry, I know what I mean, I'm just not that good at describing movies.

Aw, it's okay. I hope you like the recommendations I gave though. 😃

I loved Fingersmith. The book is better than the mini series though

I'll tell you why I have not replied.

You titled your thread: "For those unsatisfied with CAROL, here are some films you may like more".

That, by any other name, is still a snub.

Right now you won't find threads that existed before May 28th but this board has been subjected to the carps of many a**holes. Homophobes have come here to tear the movie down. Misogynists bathed in their swill. The deranged compared apples (Carol) with oranges (Brokeback Mountain).

No one movie will satisfy everyone. No one movie story will be right enough for everyone.

Perhaps, but did it ever occur to you that I didn't know how else to title my thread and still get the point across? And have you ever heard of not judging a book by its cover? Maybe don't judge a thread just by its title – because if you bothered to read the body of the post, you would see that I tried to be respectful.

I understand people have serious feelings for their favorite movies, so do I. And I understand that a lot of people don't like their favorite movies to be challenged in greatness by other people's favorite movies. But this is, after all, a discussion board. And after seeing a movie that I loved so much (LOSING CHASE), I had the desire to discuss it – and no real outlet except the slightly off-topic boards on IMDb (unless you count the board dedicated to the film, that doesn't get any traffic, and the LG BT board, which equally gets very little traffic). So naturally, I came to a place that I thought would be receptive or welcoming of suggestions for similar movies – particularly since I have noticed quite a few people express dissatisfaction with CAROL.

I didn't mean disrespect per se, I only meant to get conversation started. And more than that, I meant to pique curiosity into this movie that I have developed a great love for – one that I think deserves far more attention than it gets or has gotten in the past. In fact, if it wasn't for my mini obsession with Helen Mirren of late, I wouldn't have even found out about it myself! I have never seen it on any lesbian-movie lists that I can recall, which I think is a real injustice.

But, if it turns out no one likes it as much as I do, I might prefer that anyway – because of having a real personal relationship with the movies I love, and seeing them as part of me. I see LOSING CHASE as mine and only mine. But, I also appreciate whenever anyone admires my taste. And that's all there is to it :-)

How about if you chose the title: if you liked Carol, maybe you'll like this one too.

Keep it positive. Then you can discuss what you liked so much about the movie. People will want to interact.

Personally i'm always looking for good lesbian movies because they are few and far between. I can only speak for myself, but i loved Carol. I still do. And when you use the words 'unsatisfied' and 'Carol' in the same sentence, i'll assume we have different interests and move on to the next thread. Though if you meantion: here's a great movie i think everybody should see, i'll check it out and maybe give my 2 cents.

have you seen Revolutionary Road? it stars Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslett and takes place around the same era as Carol. i found its pacing and tone to be very similar to Carol's - slow and calm, romantic and beautiful, yet also melancholy.

I haven't seen it yet, but I definitely will. Thank you.

"Entre Nous" (1983)- a French film, directed by Diane Kurys, starring Isabelle Huppert and Miou-Miou.

Greetings Archer,

I echo Ruby's recommendation for Desert Hearts. It's set in the same time era, also sports beautiful cinematography, and features nontragic lesbian leads.

Heavenly Creatures (1994)

Another 50s set love story between two women.

I am reminded of the Mad Men series in the sense of being close to that time period and having a similar tone/mood.
