Mr. Fontaine's Accent

Did I hear correctly when they said Mr. Fontaine grew up in Russia? If so, why did he have a Spanish accent? I know the actor who plays him is from Mexico but why make his character Russian if he was going to speak with a different accent? He could have just as easily been from any other country with a similar upbringing.

Yes. I found that to be quite confounding. And no Russian would have the last name if 'Fontaine'.

That accent was horrible.

He said in the movie that it was "Fontanov" or something similar. Presumably "Fontaine" was an Anglicization of some sort. The actor attempted a Russian accent, but since his Mexican accent is so heavy, it became mush (technical term).

Yes but they wanted to make him Russian no doubt since nowadays the cliche gangster is Russian. Sorta like Italians were in the 50s. But I do agree the accent was terrible.
