Why is Jim trying to be dramatic?

This show barely tries to be funny anymore. Jim is one of the funniest comedians ever, but he fails miserably at being successfully dramatic. It's so awkward and has gone into indie-quirk territory. Why has Jim gone from a brilliantly over-the-top comedian to a pandering puss talking about topics like alcoholism, depression and disabilities without any hint of humour?

In his stand up, his best bit is on his childhood friend with the wheelchair, it's great because he uses this potentially saddening story and makes it hilarious. Yet in this show he does not try anymore, instead he makes melodramatic sob-fest with unrealistic dialogue and an insanely inconsistent tone. Season 1 did not suffer from these problems as much, but season 2 is honestly one of the worst seasons of a television show i have sat through, hoping it would get good, but it never does.

I have been really enjoying all the emotion and drama of this season. Jim is a good actor and the show has come leaps and bounds in the last year, easily one of the best things on tv right now.

He at least does a better job of emoting than Louie C.K. who always looks like he's got to fart or is otherwise in discomfort when he tries to emote. I do agree it's going a bit overboard with Jim as some secretly great guy, kind of like what Howard Stern was trying to do with his Private Parts movie, so they play up the dramatic parts a bit. I don't mind that aspect of the show, they were there from episode 1, but the show shouldn't constantly be saying how Jim's the only decent person on it.

I couldn't even make it through a single ep of Louie...
