I thought exactly the same! Sarah Snook was intriguing, but (out of all the enormous suspensions of disbelief the movie requires!) IMHO, she never passed as a man for a moment, and this ruined a couple of early reveals. I would have loved to see DeHaan act as a convincing woman.
shareI'm not clear on why a lot of people on these boards are commenting on her not looking like a passable man... her character specifically wasn't supposed to look like a normal male. That was spelled out in the movie.
She portrayed a gender-ambiguous individual in the bar scenes, as she was supposed to.
I don't know that guy, but yes he looks very close. I was seeing some Jodie Foster (but knew the age was wrong), and in retrospect, maybe Leo. But if it was Leo, it would have been a bigger deal of a movie.
And he really hasn't looked much like that since his babyface days of Quick and the Dead.
I didn't think John was Dane, but I did think Jane was Jane Levy at first.
