What was the agency doing in 1963....

if time travel was invented only in 1981 ? Shouldn't the agency be created AFTER the invention of time travel? That i really I didn't get...

Also.. how come these virtual reality projectors exist in the 60's??

Is the agency (the agents, the equipment etc..) moved back to 1960's from the future?

These time-machines can travel forward or back a FINITE number of years. This isn't the model of Temporal Folding where one can only travel back to the Machine's on_Event().

I dont remember any "mystery" tech (VR projectors), but I will rewatch it now.

By VR projectors i mean these 'helmets' under which the girls are exposed to the imagery of space travel. It definitely doesn't look like something that would exist in the early 60's.

I honestly dont remember. Nor was thrown by its advancedness. Will rewatch.

barttp, cheers! Thanks.

Yep, more fuel for the discussion of Deep-seeded New* Pasts influenced by The Agency's Prescient Knowledge. Probably why I overlooked this scene.

VR and lampshades with screens inside them are two very different things, I don't consider putting a small CRT inside a plastic bubble as particularly futuristic.

Well, someone had to find that 53 year limit at some point. :)

Could be once time travel is invented in 1981, an Agent sent back to 1928 could in place, setting up all the pieces the Bureau needs behind the scenes, in order to be at that point in the 60s.

Remember, this is also a scifi film. It doesn't have to depict a world exactly like ours. Close enough is good.

But, we did have some VR in the 60s:

that was answered (and demonstrated) when hawke jumped back to 1945 to drop off the baby. He said it earlier, eluded to it earlier when he had the clothes ready for unmarried mother and john were to meet as well: you set things up earlier so your are all set for the jump. hawke, uses his money from writing to get the time travel in business, goes back in time to set up the recruitment. he has 53 years of the future to to set up the events of 1963. I'm also a fan of the idea that Mr robertson is also an older hawke. after hawke kills his really older self, he continues on to be roberson, and in roberson's old age he goes back to being hawke.
