Erm...how did she give birth to herself?!

Okay I'll accept that she had sex with herself, but how did she give birth to herself...HOW!!!

In a hospital?

It's that man again!!

Like Ethan Hawke says "What came first? The chicken or the egg?"

Jane/John exists in a loop.

reply

Agreed, but there is no way for this loop to start. It's a nonsense. Enjoyable film but built on a stupid premise and therefore the ending was ultimately disappointing.

It's something called "The Bootstrap Paradox" which is inherent in time travel where something can loop back on itself with no definite origin. For instance, say my dad gives me a watch that someone gave him when he was 20. My dad dies, i travel back in time to when my dad was 20 and give him the watch. Where did the watch come from? How did it originate?

But what the original poster of this thread is asking, is GENETICALLY how can Jane give birth to herself? We're no talking about an inanimate object, we're talking about simple genetic math: male + female = baby ... Not you + you = you. ...right!?!?

There are several ways for this Loop to start. And it starts by cataloging catalyst.

1. perfect hermaphrodite.
2. functional time-machine.
3. another prescient time-traveler (robertson)

The loop cannot take shape without any of these catalysts. So we can source the one with the most agency, the prescient time-traveler, as the main catalyst.

This main catalyst is running an operation in search of catalyst #1, finds catalyst #1. Catalyst #2 is trickier. Perhaps it is the main catalyst. But it lacks agency; as in it is either invented or it isn't. So Catalyst #3 is actually shaping the Self-birth Loop from whenever it came. And perhaps the first Jane(s) weren't Self-birth(s).

YOUNG FIZZLE BOMBER changes the dates because, like the audience, he doesn't know which iteration this is... but he knows it isn't The First. Logically, it cannot be.

Enjoy these words, for one day they'll be gone... All of them.
