Cap faked not being able to lift Mjolnir.

He is the most "worthy" or all of them so he really must have faked it.

reply

Maybe. Or maybe he had self-doubt and therefore Mjolnir didn't think he was worthy at that time.

reply

In the comics, he's the only mortal man noble enough to lift it, but movies change certain things established in the comics.

Cap might or might not have faked, but Thor's expressions were superb.

That I agree with. It was a total, "Oh sh!t." look. 

reply

Yes. Thor's expression was priceless. He was worried there for a second

"Id rather kill myself than commit suicide"

reply

It was my guess that since they made a game of it, he wasn't worthy right then. But had the need been real, Cap could have lifted it.

reply

This is my take as well. Almost as if Mjolnir was saying "Hey now's not the time but if you need me in the future I'm here for you".

Though I do sometimes flip-flop to thinking Cap didn't really try because if he did lift it then he'd be hurting Thor and the team in some way. I wonder what might have happened if the game had been some time after Vision had already wielded Mjolnir.

Reading my signature constitutes admission that I am correct. (Too late)

reply

He might be worthy in the future, but not now.

Cap is still trying to figure his place in the world. He's not sure who he is in this century anymore. Those doubts probably make him unworthy.

If he ever does lift it, I hope it's in the middle of a huge fight and he manages to bash Thanos with it.

I believe Cap could certainly lift it but knew that Thor's pride was at stake and is too nice of a guy to embarrass him like that. He didn't know how easy it would be to lift it so that's why it budged when he was trying to fake not being able to lift it.

The movie interpreted this a bit differently than the the comics did, as previously noted. However, in the film, the Mjolnir does move a bit when Cap tries to lift it. Since Cap has the most rigid and perhaps most "honorable" ethics of the group, I think the filmmakers were trying to say that Cap IS worthy, but there's one problem...

He's not Asgardian. Since he who holds the hammer rules Asgard (as stated in the movie), Cap is disqualified, but it seems clear that the hammer was having second thoughts. :)
