How did Ultron get the infinity stone for Vision?

When Ultron created Vision he just conveniently had that infinity stone to bring the guy to sentience? And how did he even know what an infinity stone was? He got all his knowledge from watching the files that Tony Stark had in the knowledge base but so far do any of the Avengers know that Thanos is coming to collect these stones and what they are used for? I know we (the viewers) know but do the characters in the movie itself know?

The Infinity Stone was within Loki's scepter, the same scepter that Tony was studying and trying to use in order to bring the Ultron program he'd been working on to life. That's how Ultron knew about Infinity Stones, he was - in part - brought into existence because of it.

Also, I don't know that I would use the word "conveniently". He intentionally stole the scepter from Avengers tower after he had first come into being knowing full well exactly what he was stealing and what he wanted to use it for at the time that he stole it. "Conveniently" implies that he didn't have any use for it when he got it but then -- at a later date realized he suddenly did have a use for it. He always had a use for it, it's why he wanted it in the first place.

but so far do any of the Avengers know that Thanos is coming to collect these stones and what they are used for?

Thor seems to suspect that there is someone behind all this, what with 4 (at the time of this movie) stones suddenly showing up within just a few years, though he likely doesn't exactly *who* that someone is/doesn't know that it's specifically Thanos, and the other Avengers only know what little Thor has been able to tell them.

Agent Hill: ...Then aliens invaded New York and were beaten back, by among others, a giant green monster, a costumed hero from the 40's.... and a god.

Agent Ward: I don't think Thor is technically a god.

Hill: Well...you haven't been near his arms.

He didn't. He just knew there was a strong power source in the scepter.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

As stated, he made a point of taking the scepter when he left Avengers Tower (see below).

And how did he even know what an infinity stone was?

Because he was created by it - Banner and Stark used what they understood of the "AI" in the scepter (aka the mind stone) to create Ultron.

He got all his knowledge from watching the files that Tony Stark had in the knowledge base

Not exactly, he absolutely assimilated all that knowledge and then some but that's not all he knew. He came in with at least some knowledge of the mind stone as well - how much is unclear.

All the Avengers (mostly Thor) knows:

1. The Tesseract is powerful and ancient - it's unclear when Thor knew it was an infinity stone and when he told the rest of the Avengers.
2. The Aether resurfaced in Thor2 - Thor clearly knew this was an Infinity Stone, at least by the end of the film (post-credit scene). At this point (if not before) he also knows the Tesseract is/contains one.
3. It seems that Thor has heard of the events of GOTG in some respect - since we know they're in contact with the Collector this makes sense. Though it is possible he first learns of this in his vision.
4. I think it's highly unlikely that Thor (or anyone other than Loki) realized the scepter held the Mind Stone or else there's no way Thor leaves it with Stark/Banner to poke at. But his vision reveals that to him.
5. Lastly, nobody seems to know that Thanos is involved (I suppose Loki never revealed who gave him the scepter). All Thor suspects is that the four stones showing up must mean someone is doing something. Or even if someone isn't, someone will soon as the stones are going to draw attention.
6. Thor (through Odin if nothing else) will know what the stones can do for the most part and we can assume he'll relate to the Avengers.

He didn't get the infinity stone for Vision. He got it for himself, as that body was supposed to be his final one, but the Avengers some it from him.

The infinity stone was in Loki's staff. It helped create Ultron. So, Ultron recognized it's alien tech and that it created him and took it with him when he left the Avengers Tower. Analyzing the staff, he realized there was stone within a simple protective casing. Therefore, the infinity stone was discovered.

But I wouldn't say that Ultron knew it as an infinity stone, as much as a great source of power. He simple took off the protective covering and placed it in the body he was about to occupy.

Thor was the one to supply that information later in the movie.
