This may bare out next year. I have a feeling BVS is going to disappoint and then the fan rage from the DC side will spill out like never before come May.

Comic wise DC is far more mature. But so far their movies suck. Marvel is for kids all the way regardless of the media.

As I said in August 2014, Disney remains a buy on dips, and the current dip is worth considering for those who maintain a long-term perspective. Now THAT is how adults talk and what we think about.

On a large scale, box office mega hits can create demand for new or updated attractions at parks and resorts. The consumer products and interactive segments will reflect more immediate results of movie induced fanfare.

To quote the History Channel Documentary Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked from a few years back, "When you're a kid you read DC. Then, as you get older with more adult sensibilities, you graduate to Marvel."

I respect your POV but I feel it is true for comics but the other way round in case of the movies.

DC movies have made all their characters serious, realistic and human-like which would appeal to a universal audience and not just kids. Their characters are more vulnerable and face moral issues (right and wrong) everyday in their lives. This started with Batman Begins & Superman Returns and was eventually followed in other fantasy movies. Since Batman did pretty well, I think they tried to experiment with Man of Steel but that unfortunately did not work.

Marvel Studios, on the other hand can be credited for bringing the fun back into the superhero movies. Beginning Iron Man, they have owned the category of entertaining, fun and enjoyable action movies. Their characters are not too deep and do not believe in over-complicating things. They keep things simple. ( I think DC is trying to do the same with Dawn of Justice now)

Children graduating from DC comics to Marvel comics could actually be due to the opposite reason. The characters of DC comics are the most popular and fantasical. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman are all most popular characters among children and this is because they have supernatural powers (as opposed to Marvel superheroes most of whom are more practical in this department). Their powers know no bounds whereas Marvel characters' powers are always limited and uni-dimensional. It would take adults to understand the motivations and ideologies that Marvel superheroes subscribe to whereas children would have more fun and enjoyment in fantasizing about extreme, unlimited powers.

Moreover, most DC superheroes stories are based on saving others and being the saviour for mankind. As opposed to this, most Marvel stories are about the characters only whether it is Iron Man taking on the Mandarin, or Thor defeating Loki, or Hulk defeating Abomination. There is not much of a larger picture involved. In such a scenario, children (young boys, mostly) would (or rather should) idolise themselves as superheroes fighting for a larger cause, one where serving humanity is the objective. It would again take adults to understand the motivations and thinking of Marvel characters who mostly fight their own personal battles.

Another point I can think of is that DC stories are located in a fictional universe. Superman lives in Metropolis, Batman in Gotham City, Aquaman in Atlantis, etc. which are all fictional places. Conversely, Marvel stories (mostly) are based in our universe itself. While children would prefer living in a fictional, fantasical world, it would be opposite with an adult reading a superhero story.


Both universes have their own appeal and the choices of children and adluts may differ from each other. But this, in no way means that one is lesser or greater than the other.


P.S. I may be wrong in this but I simply seek to present my POV here. Please feel free to add to it or correct me in cases I may have wrongly pointed out. I too have seen the same trend that you quote and thought these were the general reasons for the same. There are exceptions to these situations for both DC and Marvel but this I thought was a general observation about both the universes.
