Can someone please explain something to me? (spoilers)

Why did the kid go into this weird dream state at the end and what was the significance of the dream itself (heading into the house for sale, his father shooting himself, his friends on the bed watching the porno).

I couldn't figure out the point of it. Surely they could have just had the aliens take him and it would have had the same effect in terms of the plot line of the film.

Obviously just a guess since they didn't explain it, but I figure it was the aliens using his dreams/mind to lure him away from his family, and is what people see when they've apparently blacked out. Remember how he "woke up" from the dream to find himself standing in the hallway with his family looking at him and wondering what he was doing? He must have looked like he was sleepwalking to them and wouldn't respond when they addressed him. While he was walking around in the dream house, he was also moving in reality.

As for the dream itself, it seemed to have typical dream elements: A familiar location with some kind of emotional significance (the house on sale, the kiss), people he knows (family, friends), things that might be on his mind (his brother's troubles, regrets about his dad).

That makes sense, thanks.

Now that I think about it all of the family members have a sleep walking dream state in the film and this was obviously his one.

Cheers!

Also, why didn't his family try to keep him near to them if he was sleepwalking away? My best guess is the dream was only a weak attempt at figuring out a way for him to walk away from his family without making the audience see them stand idly by.

That was my question too...why didn't they try to grab him and pull him back. And why did they keep splitting up into different rooms....god I hate when people do that in movies.

The expert told them vivid hallucinations and preying on personal fears were some of the tactics employed by the Grays.

I got the impression the aliens were actively trying to not do more harm than necessary. They could have easily reduce the family and take the kid, yet they choose to lure him in.

Those grays had the power to hypnotize people (that's what the implants were for), so they could have easily taken Jesse without all the extra drama. Even better, they simply could have waited until everyone was asleep to take Jesse. Nothing in this movie really adds up if you think too much about it.

They've all been bugged so that the aliens can control them. They basically see and do what they are told, basically like the sheeples who listens to everything the government tells them. This movie felt like a metaphor of government control.
