Alien powers were inconsistent

which pretty much ruined the film for me. The first 3/4 of the movie portrays these magical creatures who can come and go, disappear or appear in a flash. The one alien made the little boy disappear and reappear outside a split second later. The last quarter of the movie, the "alien invasion", depicts aliens that mostly abide by human rules. They had to break through the boarded windows (really?), and bust through locked doors. Is this a plot hole or just inconsistent writing?

No, they weren't abiding by any rules, that was just a tactic to separate them. They had Daniel distracted with the front door, Lucy distracted with the be room TV, but the boys were still together. It wasn't until they separated Jesse that they were able to "beam" him away.

Granted, you wouldn't think they would need to trick the family into separating. They're all implanted, so you'd think the aliens could just force them to be where they needed them. Maybe it was a test to see if they would separate given the free will to do so.

Yep, that family was easily distracted, to say the least. If aliens just needed the physical separation in order to abduct, as a mom or dad I'd probably chain my family together, rather than go investigating sounds in different rooms without the others. But maybe a movie about smart people making sound choices wouldn't be quite so interesting. I dunno. Has it ever been tested?

I can't imagine that beings with the ability to teleport and remote-control humans would be thwarted by them linking together. But who knows, maybe they live by some code and choose not to abduct kids from tight-knit, cohesive families.

I don't think they could teleport, you assume that because of the alarm. They enter and exit the house via the door, they just don't set the alarm off, you can call that weird, but then they can't be recorded by video either - they obviously emit some kind of field.

Unlock the door with their mind or magnetism and use their EM field to trick the alarm or dampen it's sensor.

No, it's inconsistent writing. We already knew that the aliens could remotely control or temporarily stun the individuals in that house. No need for distraction, just take him. And they also could have just taken Jesse while on his way to or from school, to avoid any theatrics altogether.

I think the whole premise was that they were essentially lab rats and they were testing their choices and will. They had the power to do what ever they wanted but as the guy said, they were studying them.

I think you're right, pva. And it might have also been their evaluation of the family's responses and ability to cope that decided whether they took one of them away or not.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

ooo I didn't get that but I guess it makes sense.

I agree with the poster who said he would chain his family together (lol), that was basically my thought. I wonder what the aliens would have concluded from that 😎
