Well made but forgettable film.

It was nicely shot and I liked the mood of some scenes, but I did not find this compelling on the whole. I didn't think anyone was developed well. Cage is getting a ton of praise, but I thought he was an awkward fit throughout. It wasn't just the terrible beard. I didn't buy him as Joe. He's been great in a few movies. He's been terrible in some. This was neither. He is technically solid but I don't agree with the high praise.

It felt to me as if it was riding on the coattails of Mud and Winter's Bone. My stepfather always used to complain that if there were a hit, then Hollywood would keep coming up with similar films which would generally tank.

I liked it, though ... and don't think it's completely forgettable. Perhaps for me a little more like something I might wish to forget. But I'll have to give it time. I might wish to go back to it someday except for some of the gratuitous stuff.

I agree.

Maybe the book is different but I didn't buy the character of Joe being this man that has his paternal instict come to the surface because the kid is being abused.

Especially since this is truly a movie where the law is your friend.
And contacting the law would have made it all end in a pretty bow.

I personally enjoyed the film.

I think it had a lot of potential, but fell apart because of amateur performance (the father) and bizarre pacing/scenes. The bonding scene between Joe and Gary was weird, as was Joe's freakout with the dog incident. Neither fit with the film at all.

Agree with OP, between the mumbling, the drinking, and the yelling, almost seemeed like a compilation of his other movies

Also, I think I get that the two dogs fighting was symbolic of Joe and Mr. Windshield, but the whole dog freakout scenes could have been left out im my opinion.
