For some reason quite a lot of people seem to be confused/upset over the mask and its purpose but I thought it was fairly easy to at least guess.

I thought he wore the mask to hide his face and put the girl at ease.
A fetish, plain and simple.
Not to get all psychological on you, but masks are frequently used for anonymity. Example: you have a desire to commit some act but it is against societal standards or it presents a sort of moral conflict inside you (various reasons), a mask helps a person to detach and fulfill their fantasies/desires without feeling remorse. It was actually very cleverly shot by the director. Notice how after Joe takes his mask off he starts making excuses/trying to justify it...that wasn't just for Joe, that was for himself.
