The plot feels similar. I enjoyed Mud. Should I check this movie out?

absolutely, JOE and MUD would make a perfect double feature. Very similar tone and atmosphere, not to mention Tye Sheridan acts in both.

Also David Gordon Green and Jeff Nichols are school friends.

Not at all. Mud is so much better and Matthew is better actor than Nicolas. I found Joe a little boring movie, but it has some good scenes! Joe is not movie what I expected, and this is all about just Joe (Nicolas Cage). But you can trying to check this one if you want.

There's something wrong with Esther.
