I think the book was better, not that the film wasn't good and the cast was great, but the book was just much better, but then I'm a Larry Brownn fan so...They need to try to do another movie based on another of his books, "Fay" was pretty awesome too.
I just read the book and then watched the film straight after. I agree, the book is better (aren't the always?). Joe and Garry are portrayed slightly differently and I prefer the book characters to the film's. But the film is still good, just doesn't have the added extra stuff (the ex-wife and daughter) and doesn't get to the bottom of the characters so much.
I preferred the ending in the book too...even though there wasn't one if you know what I mean. ;)
It's the first Brown book I have read, but I am a fan of grit lit and Southern noir etc, so shall be reading more of his work.
I also remember liking the book more as well, but still very much enjoyed the film. MAJOR SPOILER. For the life of me i cannot remember what happens to Joe. I know the father runs away and the family begins to start a somewhat functional life, but happens to Joe? No matter how much I think I cannot remember how the character ends up in the book. If anyone remembers can they please let me know? Thanks.
