Was Chastains accent supposed to be Irish or Scottish?

I was watching and I had no idea, she was all over the place. I guess her dialogue coach was crap.

reply

Ha! Yeah im wondering that about her and Hemsworth. Was his accent like that in the first movie?

reply

Only she and the Lord know

reply

She's one of my favourite actresses but I couldn't bear to watch her in this when she spoke - her accent was awful. It seemed to go back and forth between Irish and Scottish.

Her accent and lack of chemistry with Chris Hemsworth really affected the film.

reply

Does it matter? It's not set in a real world

reply

Aus-tish and AmeriGaelScot.

It's too cerebral! We're trying to make a movie here, not a film!

reply

I was really put off by it too.

I guess since the entire story is set in a fantasy world, there isn't supposed to be a defined categorization of accents so the inconsistency is excusable. As long as it sounds "foreign" enough to American audience's ears, then it's considered okay. But to someone who is very familiar with British accents, the inconsistency is quite distracting!

reply

Drove me nuts. I had to turn it off.

reply

She had a consistently bad accent, but Hemsworth kept switching between his normal speaking voice and that terrible Irish accent.

reply

He was supposed to be Scottish. I'm Scottish and I couldn't understand a lot of his dialogue. He just slurred his words. I don't remember him being that bad in he first one. Chastain's accent was quite good when she wasn't shouting.

reply

Her accent was horrible, and Chris's wasn't much better. Her 6 years on him was a little too conspicuous (they were around the same age when kids, then she's 38).
