Outlander vs Black Sails

One show has horrible pacing, mediocre actors, terribly unengaging and dull characters, and poor dialogue.

And the other is Outlander.

Thoughts on both?

I'll be waiting patiently.

Rick did many a thing in his pants, but that's best saved for another discussion at another time.

yea.. I got nothing. I never finished S1 of Outlander, can you give me a good reason to give it another shot? Does it get much MUCH better? I'm considering it.

No and

Does it get much MUCH better? I'm considering it.

nope. The S2 premiere shows promise, but it's an average show at best with above-average qualities. But at least it's better than Black Sails at the moment, at least in my opinion.

I watched Outlander for awhile and then I got bored. It is OK, nothing special. Maybe close to Vikings in terms of quality but nowhere near Black Sails.

I Love Black Sails. I haven't tried Outlander and I probably won't because I didn't care for the books. I gave the 1st book a solid 300 page try and nope; not my thing.

Black Sails. I inadvertently took 7-day tour of the Scottish highlands and found myself stuck 24/7 with 12 Outlander fangirls. 7 DAYS of "OMG Jaime's a$$" at every single filming location, and 100,000 selfies in front of large rocks and fields that the characters may have used.

If its fan-tourism is anything to go by, its nothing I ever want go near.

LMAO. Oh Tina, that would be my worst nightmare.

I've never seen Outlander. I dont even know who's in it.

reply

Within the first two days, in the back of the bus where I was, they renamed our good looking tour guide, _____ to "Michael Ian" because his real name wasn't romantic enough. It took one extra day for one of the girls to get severely drunk on a remote outer Hebrides island and tell him all about his new name and the backstory they created for him. That poor tour guide.

Outlander is just OKAY. It is not anywhere in the same league as Black Sails. The idea of comparing the two shows is laughable.

reply

I just looked at a few threads. I dont think this is my kind of show.

reply

The books are much better than the TV show. They are lot grittier and more realistic and the TV show is somewhat romanticized a bit, so of course the audience on the threads in the discussion forum are filled with people like Zanza.

Well I can certainly do without that. Thanks for the headsup, Artemis👍. I'll give it a miss. I'll check the book out instead.

Later on, those fangirls were spotted at a male strip club demanding strippers wear kilts! Reports suggest they were very ferocious and aggressive with their demands.

I read those and I do not like Outlander. 

My brother and my father watch Outlander though, and say they like it!

I watch both shows and GREATLY prefer Black Sails. I have trouble getting through some episodes of Outlander and find Claire to be irritating. That actress seems lovely but her acting is so bad at times. I laughed out loud during the season 2 premiere when she starts shouting 'WHAT YEAR IS IT?! Who won the war?!'

reply

I don't like Outlander as much as Black Sails. I could not stand Claire as a character. I expected a little more bravery I suppose from a war nurse. I also am not into the romance aspect of it which I think appeals to a lot of its fans. I have a friend at work who loves Outlander. I suggested Black Sails and she did not like it. I even warned her to give it
time. I am liking this season of Outlander better. Black Sails improved a lot during season two I am hoping for the same with Outlander.

I'm not a fan of romance in my tv entertainment either, so definitely giving this the miss. I get the feeling it's a bit Mills and Boonish. The only romance I have really liked in Black Sails so far has been the gay reveal, and Madi with Silver which has been pretty subtle. Eleanor and Woodes - urgh. I'm hanging onto Zach's words that she's just manipulating him to protect herself. Really hoping there isnt any frilly lovey dovey stuff coming next season. The other relationships depicted havent been old school Mills and Boon kinda romances so eventhough there has been quite a lot of them I dont feel like I'm watching a swooning, bosom swelling period show.

reply

Black Sails for the win. I am viewing season 2 from Outlander and I about about to smack Jaime & Claire. Two of the most annoying people on earth.

If it wasn't for Tobias Menzies, I would seriously give up this series. I fecking love Toby!!!!

I discovered Outlander as a way to keep myself amused when Black Sails was in off-season. I also lived in Edinburgh for a time, and so love all things Scotland. It's not my usual preference and I did initially find the whole time travel thing really hard to get to grips with, but half way through S1 i admitted I actually quite liked it. I've since binge watched it, caught up in real time and read the first two books at absolute warp speed.

Pitting it against Black Sails is like putting a tree against a sheet of paper - both with similar origins, but both serving different purposes with pros and cons.

Yup, me too though I'd read the first Outlander book many years ago. Franky, I quite like both and they both keep me entertained. I started watching Outlander because BS, Got and TWD (my favorite shows) were all on hiatus. I do like the actors in Outlander though, they are very good IMO and my favorite is Black Jack. What a brilliant performance Tobias Menzies gives. He deserves an Emmy for playing one of the worst but most interesting villains I've ever seen. He just may worse than Ramsay Bolton which is saying a lot. 

Then again, I couldn't be sadder that BS is going to end after one more season. That really sucks and I'm going to miss it terribly. 
